Let's build a Time Machine
How to make the Future Happens
Sunday is my favorite day. Because I have all the time in the world to write. I had planned to send you a long diatribe on society: “How to break your social conditioning?”
My pen was sharpened, my thoughts organized… then I looked out of my window.
I saw the sun caressing the landscape, birds singing life, an azure blue sky. There’s a day for everything, and Sunday’s energy wasn’t in tune with my initial text.
Sunday is a light day, let’s write something light.
Let’s open our minds.
Let’s let creativity flow in.
Imagine that you can create your future?
That you could build a machine to explore the future and come back today.
I am amused to picture some of you thinking :
“Ok, he lost it.”
But stick with me to the end.
Give me the benefit of the doubt, just for a few lines.
In my reading over the last few years, I’ve become interested in visualization. I was already familiar with it, as it’s widely used in sport.
Before a major event, many sportsmen and women mentally condition themselves.
They close their eyes, imagine themselves winning. The smell of the arena. Lifting the trophy. The crowd cheering. Being proud of themselves. Feeling the victory.
There’s this quote from Serena Williams :
“You need to see things happening and envision yourself in a fantasy world — and really believe in that fantasy world, until it comes true.”
Michael Phelps, one of the greatest swimmers of all time, also uses visualization methods.
At 2min30, he says some interesting words, “he sometimes visualizes a month in advance.”
Today, we’ll be drawing on these methods for our practical exercise.
But we're not going to imagine a month, but years.
The exercise is simple.
Close your eyes and imagine your perfect self.
The vision must be vivid. Not a sketch, but a detailed image.
Of that you in the distant future who has everything you’ve ever dreamed of having.
What does he look like?
How does he behave?
How confident is he?
What is its level of knowledge?
How wealthy is he?
What’s around him?
Where does he live?
What does he own?
Who are the people closest to him?
…
Ask yourself all the important questions.
Add color, refine your vision.
Make it as detailed as possible.
Take time to consider the small details.
Once you’ve pictured the perfect you : take some notes.
Exercise 1 completed.
A few days later (I recommend 3, that would be 10 sessions a month) we’ll repeat the exercise. But with a twist.
We’ll ask ourselves:
How he got there?
What did he do to become this person?
What did he learn to become this person?
What level of discipline did he use to get there?
How did he accumulate his wealth?
How did these people get close to him?
…
Let your imagination create the answers.
You’ve understood the process.
In each session, we’ll go back in time.
Our starting point is the distant future. The ultimate goal is to get back to where we are today.
To have a vivid plan of the actions you need to take to meet this you of the future. The road to your destination. Take notes at every session. You’ll have a written record of this emerging path.
Having visualized success in your mind and correlated positive actions with the realization of your dream, it will be easier for you to be disciplined.
I don’t like to be 100% affirmative, because we all have different imagination processes. But for some of us, if we take the time to look for them: we have our answers deep inside us.
If you’re wondering: why do I write every morning?
This perfect vision I have of myself has become is committed to this habit.
I have other habits that are attached to this vision.
Whenever I don’t feel like doing them, I close my eyes and remember my perfect self.
I remind myself that even if I’m desperate not to do it, I have to do it.
I’ve seen the blueprint of my future.
I know all I have to do is lay the bricks, relentlessly, every day.
Have a nice Sunday.
Take care.
